See GIW Pumps and Parts — Up Close and Personal

Closeup of oil sandsIn the oil sands, when you’re working to keep production at its peak, who do you depend on most? Besides your own engineering team – your suppliers! In this harsh environment, it’s essential to partner closely with the people who provide critical equipment and services for your mission.

GIW is looking to help make that connection even better. At the conclusion of the upcoming Oil Sands Trade Show and Conference, GIW will host an open house at the Fort McMurray GIW Service Center. Following the close of the trade show on Wednesday, Sept. 10, join us for food, fun, information, and networking from GIW and our partners.

Bigger and better every year

The open house at GIW’s Service Center is a popular annual event that draws industry experts from all levels, including team leads, contract engineers, planners, material contractors, and the mechanics who work on pumps in the field. GIW Service Center General Manager Brad Johnson says everyone is welcome. “Some attendees are people who know about GIW® Minerals’ slurry products, but have never seen them. Some want to learn more about the inner workings of the pumps they rely on out in the field,” he says.

This year, attendees will be able to tour the new facility expansion, which has increased the floor space of the facility from 19,000 square feet to 29,000 square feet. The facility is designed to provide storage and inventory to support the pump customers in the oil sands industry in Alberta. As the industry has expanded, GIW has expanded its services to meet our customers’ growing needs.

Previously, GIW had stored many large castings in sheltered locations in the Service Center yard. However, winter weather conditions in the Fort McMurray area could cause ice and frost to accumulate on some parts, such as bearing assemblies, and the moisture could damage the bearings. Johnson says, “Now we have room to bring our full inventory indoors. We have very high ceilings, so we can use a pallet stacking system to expand vertically, too, increasing our ability to carry the inventory that our customers need to have on hand.” With the expanded inventory space, customers have fast access to pumps and parts including bearing assemblies, gear reducers, and other types of mechanical drives.

“We also have more cover for our service operations,” says Johnson. “This means a lot to our service technicians who work to ensure all assemblies are delivered in top condition, ready to work.”

Meet and greet the people you work with

GIW will be exhibiting at the Oil Sands Trade Show, but Johnson notes that there’s only so much that can be displayed in an exhibit booth. He says, “The open house gives us and our partners the opportunity to show off components and capabilities that aren’t feasible to show in a trade show exhibit. Because the open house will take place after the last day of the trade show, attendees can stop by after the show has ended, and local customers can come by after the end of the work day.”

This year’s open house will feature additional displays, including the ever-popular slurry loop demonstration, a clear pipeline that shows how slurries move through a pump system. GIW‘s highly skilled and knowledgeable technical engineers will be on hand to answer questions and give expert insights.

In addition to GIW® Minerals’ pump products, some of our partner vendors will be present to provide attendees with information about their products. These vendors will include gear box manufacturer Falk/Rexnord and Chesterton, supplier of SpiralTrac® centrifugal separator lantern rings for GIW stuffing boxes.

We’ll also be joined both at the open house and at our show booth by representatives from Trelleborg, makers of rubber hose and expansion barrels that are the preferred solutions in the harsh oil sands environments. Trelleborg will have a new product for the Oil Sands show on display at the Open House.

Visitors to the open house who will benefit the most are end users — people who haven’t necessarily seen GIW parts in person. “The sheer size of some of the parts is impressive,” says Johnson. “And the volume of the parts GIW stocks often surprises people, too. Many customers only use perhaps five or ten pump products and don’t realize that GIW has hundreds of pumps and components.”
